VIRGINIA
PLAN YOUR TRIP TO VIRGINIA
Virginia travel is fun to plan: here are some great trip ideas and destinations to help you plan your Virginia getaway.
Virginia is a place of great natural beauty and strong historical roots. From the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains to Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Bay to Luray Caverns, you can enjoy awesome scenic beauty and wildlife as varied as whales and wild ponies.
The Powhatan people were the first inhabitants of this area; including Pocahontas (actually a nickname, her real name according to the Powhatan Renape Nation was Matoaka). English settlers first arrived in April of 1607 and founded Jamestown, which will be celebrating its 400th birthday in 2007. Today museums dot the landscape and cover everything from plantation life to colonial life, from Revolutionary War to Civil War, from slavery to freedom. You’ll find Washington’s birthplace, Arlington National Cemetery, Mount Vernon, the Pentagon, Monticello, Appomattox Court House, Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown. For more historical information you can log on to: www.apva.org (Jamestown Rediscovery), www.powhatan.org, www.colonialwilliamsburg.com, and www.hamptonu.edu/museum (the first university for freed slaves).
Hiking, skiing, biking, fishing, swimming, sunbathing, boating, canoeing, dancing, shopping, dining and relaxing; add to this list historical re-enacting, amusement and theme parks, wine tasting and you’ll be just touching the tip of the iceberg.
