Kentucky is famous for horse racing, from Churchill Downs to Kentucky Downs. The International Museum of the Horse is the world’s largest equestrian museum. It’s located in Lexington, and covers over 50 million years of equine history.
Kentucky is also a great place to see wildlife, including bison, elk, bald eagles, bears and 30 species of warblers.
Kentucky was a “border state” in the Civil War, being a slave state that never seceded from the Union. Kentucky declared itself neutral, but a Confederate capital was established at Bowling Green. Hart County is the location of the first Civil War Monument in the nation, erected in 1861.
Over 20,000 Native American archaeological sites exist in Kentucky, ranging from burial mounds to rock art to seasonal camps and caves.
Mammoth Cave National Park is the longest recorded cave system in the world. There are over 360 miles of cave that have been mapped.
